Our Swimming Syllabus will introduce STA certifications that encompass the training of stroke correction as well as stamina building and speed. This is to complement the current swim safer awards as they cater to basic water safety knowledge and lifesaving aspects but neglected the importance of stamina building.
There will be 4 levels in our Training.
From Swimsafer Silver Gold to STA Seal 2-4. Below are the specifications of the awards:
Swimsafer Gold
Children will be required to perform strokes with greater ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over 400 metres. Rescue skills and water safety knowledge will focus on lifesaving readiness. Standing dive and personal safety skills will continue to be taught.
Demonstrate a standing dive
Keep face above the water surface for 60 secs using legs only
Search for and recover an object in 1.8m of water depth
Demonstrate equalizing of ear/nose
Swim 400m continuously
- 100m Breaststroke
- 100m Front Crawl
- 100m Backstroke
- 100m Survival Backstroke or Sidestroke
Dressed in swimwear, long pants, long-sleeved shirt, shoes and socks, perform the following sequence;
- Enter deep water using an appropriate entry method swim 5m underwater to simulate an escape from a sinking boat surrounded by oil
- Swim a further 45m as if escaping from a dangerous situation
- Swim slowly for further 50m using any preferred swim stroke occasionally signalling for help
- Remove clothing in deep water. Fit PFD correctly while treading water, swim 100m using appropriate strokes
- Demonstrate HELP technique and climb out of the water whilst wearing the PFD
To include progressive open water module
Using a suitable buoyant aid, tow (non-contact) rescue of a person 10m from safety Principles when performing a rescue
Seal 2
- Perform a straddle entry from the poolside.
- Swim 100 metres in less than 4 minutes.
- Perform a feet first surface dive.
- Tread water for 1 minute waving one arm above the water to attract attention.
- Tread water for 3 minutes.
- Swim 200 metres stop and rest for 2 minutes by either floating or treading water then swim a further 200 metres.
- Climb out of pool from deep water without assistance.
Seal 3
- Perform a straddle entry from the poolside.
- Swim 100 metres in less than 4 minutes.
- Tread water for 2 minutes.
- Tread water for 2 minutes waving one arm above the water to attract attention.
- Remove jumper of sweatshirt.
- Swim 800 metres in less than 30 minutes; during the swim perform a feet first surface dive and a head first surface dive.
- Swim any recognised stroke on the front or side
- Completely submerge the body for both surface dives.
- Climb out of the pool from the deep end without assistance.
Seal 4
- Perform a straddle entry from the poolside.
- Swim 100 metres in less than 2½ minutes.
- Remove footwear and tread water for 2 minutes
- Simulating cramp in one leg, massage the affected leg with a free hand.
- Tread water – One leg kicking, one arm sculling other hand massaging leg with the simulated cramp.
- Tread water for 5 minutes. Any leg action, any arm action, mouth clear of the water.
- Swim 500 metres in less than 15 minutes.
- Tread water for 2 minutes waving one arm above the water to attract attention.
- Find a floating abject and then remove an article of clothing.
- Swim with the floating object for 100 metres, resting twice in the H.E.L.P. position for 2 minutes each time.
- Swim any recognised stroke on the front or side
- H.E.L.P – Head out of the water, elbows tucked to the sides and arms across the chest, legs together.
- Climb out of the pool in deep water without assistance.
Long Distance Proficiency Award
A test of your endurance on top of your Survival skills and Swim safer Skills. Swimming in long distance of 3km, 5km and 6km. Test your endurance and capability.
